Winnie Hsu – Personal Statement
I am a positive and efficient person, always trying to learn new things and building on my specialties: training, data analysis, and beer brewing. I am active and ambitious, and I love sports, especially swimming. The most amazing thing I’ve done so far was to swim across Taiwan’s famous Sun-Moon Lake.
Before I joined the beer industry, I worked at TGI Friday’s, an American bistro in Taipei. It was a part-time job while I was in college. I had a great time there, learning integral training skill to help orient new staff, not to mention many wonderful experiences meeting customers and making friends.
In 2007, I had the amazing opportunity to work at the restaurant in Gordon Biersch Brewery. This experience encouraged me to challenge a new field for my career. I trained as a brewer in Atlanta and Phoenix USA for 6 months, and so I became was the first female brewer in Taiwan. I also joined the Pink Boot Society, an association just for women brewers in this industry.
In 2011, I joined Long Sun Brewing Co, the oldest and biggest micro-brewery in Taiwan, to work in their highly professional facilities and hone my technical skill. Long Sun sent me to Berlin, to VLB where I attended the Certificate Master Brewer Course, a 6-month highly concentrated course led by VLB’s director of Research and Development. I designed quite a few seasonal beers, and they won some prizes, for example Red pepper ale (2013 Bronze medal at the ABC, Japan), Buckwheat Lager (2014 Gold medal at the IBC Japan) Formosa Wheat (2014 Silver medal at EBS)
