Mark Pygott MW
Mark, a resident in Taiwan for four years, consults the highest level of wine education available on the island, whilst also consulting with restaurants, hosting events, writing (including the illustrated wine blog sniff.com.tw) and, in conjunction with designer Michael O’Neill, providing marketing and promotional materials to wine estates and regions across the globe.
In 2012, on arrival in Taiwan, Mark began his Master of Wine (MW) and in September 2016 successfully completed it, making him Taiwan’s first and only Asia’s eighth resident MW.
Mark began his career in wine in 2002. His first job was as a cellar hand at Three Choirs in Gloucestershire, England. He then moved to the Languedoc in the south of France where he became the assistant to Winemaker Michel Le Goaec at Domaine Montrose in the Cotes de Thongue. After 12 months listening and learning from Michel and exploring and tasting his way through the Languedoc’s wine regions, Mark returned to the UK where he established an importing business (Oliver & Bird), that initially specialised in the wines of the Languedoc but later branched out into other non-classic regions of production such as Campania in Italy and Galicia in Spain. The focus of his business was to discover delicious wine that was under-represented in the UK before selling and distributing it to the best of the on-trade in south-west England. Having overseen continued growth for eight years at O&B, Mark sold the business and moved to Asia.
