I arrived much too early for the tasting and drank a coffee and listened to the pre-show pep-talk. Domaine is a professional show.
The 7 new Champagnes were all RMs, and I actually liked best the sophisticated first 2, by Etienne Calsac, both Blanc de Blancs, though 7 was also impressive, a Grand Cru Blanc de Noir with just 5g/l dosage, disgorged in January this year. No need to get too geeky about these beauties. The prices are very competitive. Domaine is still by far the best Champagne bar in town.
For the still wines, as usual I found the whites very approachable even so young. I preferred the whites from 2017 and the reds from 2018. Delphi explained that 2017 was a more difficult year to ripen the Pinot noir, but the Chardonnays had an easier time holding their acidity. The next year was warmer, which was better for the reds. So there’s some advice.
As ever, the staff at Domaine were impeccably prepared to present all the wines to their best advantage.
I photographed all my favorites, including ALL the Champagnes.
