Youngsters beware, some of us old folks may never retire. At 80 years of age, Christian Moueix continues to build an incomparable and legendary resume.
2026 marked his 57th year of winemaking on the Right Bank of Bordeaux and his 43rd year of deep cultivation in Napa Valley.
Here below I’m going to share EVERYTHING I learned today. Take as much as you want. This one is worth a deep dive.
Christian Moueix was born in Libourne, France, in 1946, and he began managing his family’s estates in 1970, including the legendary Pétrus, which he directed for 38 years.
He continues to oversee eight family estates and has served as the President of the noted Négociant, ETS Jean-Pierre Moueix since 1991.
Christian has deep commitments to his land. Since the 1970s, he has actively promoted innovation—including organic farming, helicopter frost protection, advanced crop-thinning techniques, and more innovative technologies to address climate change.
His winemaking philosophy has always centered on elegance, complexity, and especially equalibrium.
Key Milestones:
1983: He Produced the first vintage of Dominus at the Napanook vineyard in Yountville, Napa Valley.
2008: Acquired the Oakville vineyard.
2012: Launched **Ulysses**.
2023: Completion of the **Château Bélair-Monange winery, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, marking the sixth collaboration between the two parties.
His vineyards hold the highest level of HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification in France and CCOF organic certification in Napa Valley. Christian Moueix is dedicated to protecting the vitality of the vineyards, offering incomparable vintages for generations to come.
SITES
CHATEAU BELAIR MONANGE
Château Bélair-Monange is a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate in Saint-Émilion, regarded as one of the “crown jewels” of the Right Bank. Its current identity was formed in 2008 when Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix acquired the historic Château Bélair and renamed it in honor of Anne-Adèle Monange, the mother of Christian Moueix.
The estate is defined by several key characteristics:
- Unique Terroir
The vineyard covers approximately 23.5 hectares and is situated at one of the highest points of the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau. It is uniquely composed of two distinct geological formations:
- The Plateau: Features a thin layer of soil over solid limestone, which provides the wine with exceptional freshness, minerality, and aromatic delicacy. The boundaries of the plateau had to be fortified to prevent erosion resulting from quarrying of limestone up to the property lines.
- The Slopes: Composed of blue clay (the iconic feature of Petrus) over limestone, which adds power, density, and structural intensity to the blend.
- Vineyard Composition and History
The estate neighbors other legendary properties like Château Ausone and Château Canon.
- Grape Varieties: The plantings are dominated by Merlot (98% in the current vintage) with a small but vital percentage of Cabernet Franc.
- Old Vines: The property boasts a significant proportion of old vines, with some parcels dating back to the 1930s and even 1900, contributing to the complexity and depth of the fruit.
- Winemaking Philosophy
Under the direction of Christian and Édouard Moueix, the winemaking focuses on elegance and precision rather than raw power.
- Meticulous Selection: Grapes are hand-picked and undergo rigorous sorting, including the use of optical and laser sorting tables.
- Aging: The wines typically age for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels (approximately 40% new), with a focus on integrating the wood rather than masking the terroir.
- Recent Developments
In 2012, the Moueix family merged the neighboring Château Magdelaine into Bélair-Monange, effectively doubling the size of the estate and consolidating some of the finest parcels on the limestone plateau. In 2023, the estate completed a new, state-of-the-art winery designed by the world-renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron, providing a modern facility that reflects the prestige of the wine.
- Signature Style
The wine is celebrated for being suave, polished, and mineral-driven. It often displays notes of black cherries, violets, and licorice, backed by fine, chalky tannins. While approachable in its youth compared to some of its neighbors, it has immense aging potential, often reaching its peak between 15 and 40 years after the vintage.
Second Wine: The estate also produces a second label called Annonce de Bélair-Monange, which is crafted to be more accessible in its youth while maintaining the estate’s signature elegance.
DOMINUS
Dominus Estate is one of the most significant wineries in Napa Valley, located on the historic Napanook vineyard in Yountville. Established by Christian Moueix in 1982, it represents a deliberate marriage of Bordeaux tradition and California terroir.
The estate is defined by several core pillars:
- The Napanook Vineyard
The vineyard is the heart of the estate and has a history dating back to 1838.
- Location: Situated on the edge of the Mayacamas Mountains on the Yountville Bench, it benefits from a unique microclimate cooled by breezes from San Pablo Bay.
- Soil: Composed of gravelly clay loam of volcanic origin, providing excellent drainage and the stress necessary for high-quality grapes.
- Dry Farming: Dominus is a pioneer of “dry farming” in Napa. By not irrigating, the vines are forced to grow deep root systems, which results in smaller, more concentrated berries and a true expression of the vintage’s weather patterns.
- Architectural Landmark
The winery building, completed in 1997, was the first U.S. project by the Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.
- Gabion Structure: The building is constructed of wire cages (gabions) filled with local basalt rocks.
- Functionality: This design isn’t just aesthetic; the gaps between the rocks allow natural light to filter through and provide natural thermal insulation, maintaining stable temperatures in the cellar while allowing the winery to “breathe.”
- Winemaking Philosophy
The approach at Dominus is often described as “restrained” compared to the typical Napa style.
- Elegance over Power: The focus is on balance, complexity, and longevity rather than high alcohol or heavy oak.
- Varieties: The vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
- Sustainability: The estate is CCOF-certified organic and emphasizes biodiversity and minimal intervention in the vineyard.
- The Wines
The estate produces three distinct wines from the same vineyard:
- Dominus: The flagship Grand Vin, intended for long-term aging. It is known for its depth, silky tannins, and complex notes of dark fruit, forest floor, and minerals.
- Napanook: Created in 1996, this is the estate’s second wine. It is crafted to be more approachable and fruit-forward in its youth while maintaining the estate’s signature elegance.
- Othello: A third wine (we didn’t taste it today) launched in 2012, designed to be an accessible introduction to the estate’s style.
- Global Recognition
Dominus has achieved a legendary status, frequently receiving “perfect” 100-point scores from major critics. It was famously named the #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator for the 2018 vintage, solidifying its place as a quintessential benchmark for world-class Cabernet Sauvignon.
ULYSSES
This vineyard in Napa’s Oakville (about 1 mile north of Napanook) is officially known as Ulysses Vineyard.
Historically, the property was known as Schmidt Ranch. Before Christian Moueix acquired it in 2008, the vineyard was a source for Swanson Vineyards. Even further back in the 19th century, this land was part of the original Charles Hopper Ranch (specifically the northern edge of what is now known as the Missouri Hopper Ranch).
Quick Facts about the Site:
- Location: Situated along the Oakville Bench at the foot of the Mayacamas Range. It sits in an elite neighborhood, flanked by the Missouri Hopper Ranch, Vine Hill Ranch, and the famous To Kalon vineyard.
- Terroir: The soil is primarily deep, gravelly clay loam on an alluvial fan, which Moueix found particularly suited for Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Management: Much like Dominus, the vineyard is 100% dry-farmed and received its CCOF organic certification in 2021.
Being a little north of YOUNTVILLE and therefore less inundated with fog from San Francisco Bay, Ulysses vineyard is on average 2 degrees warmer than Napanook.
